Roger Federer blasted young Scot, Andy Murray, 6-2 7-5 6-2 in one hour 51 minutes to take the US Open crown...he now has 13 Grand Slam titles, only one behind record holder Pete Sampras.
Federer joined Pete and Jimmy Connors as five-time winners of the Flushing title in the Open era, but neither won in five successive years -- Bill Tilden did manage the feat over 80 years ago. Roger, the best player of all-time and one of the absolutely classiest, is the first man ever to win five consecutive titles at two Grand Slam tournaments - having also won Wimbledon 2003-2007.
Fed said afterwards. "This is a very special moment in my career. I had a couple of tough Grand Slams this year, finishing in semi-finals and two finals, one epic at Wimbledon. So to take this one home is incredible. It means the world to me."
Murray can leave New York with his head held high after becoming the first British man since Greg Rusedski (born and raised in the English village of Montreal) in 1997 to reach the final of a Grand Slam. Looks like at the age of 21, the new world # 4 is just getting started. As is the pressure and the relentless obsession that comes with being the British numero uno....The English may not like some of the comments he made in jest during a 2006 interview and some still believe that he resents being British, but make no mistake -- whether it is someone Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish, if a Brit wins a slam it will be celebrated as if they were from the West of London, it has been 72 years since they have had a Grand Slam champion
