BE Title up for grabs
3/2/09
Uconn @ Pitt, 2:00, Saturday on CBS
Huskies took a close one over Notre Dame on Senior Day at Gampel..Adrien, Austrie, Price and Thabeet played their last game on campus and took over the #1 spot in the country again. #801 for Calhoun was not without struggle, the game remained in doubt until the closing seconds. Jeff Adrien, one of the most under appreciated Huskies in a long time, left the Pavilion in style -- with a season high 25 points. Hasheem Thabeet chipped in 16 points and, once again, carried the defense with 11 rebounds and eight blocks.
Up Next:
The Huskies (27-2, 15-2), will now have to wait until Saturday before the much anticipated rematch with Pittsburgh. The nationally televised battle royale will have Connecticut playing for either a shared BE title or a conference title of their own (that will depend on Louisville's result versus West Virginia ) -- a regular season trophy will be their 11th since 1990.
After Pitt, Uconn will wait until the Big East quarterfinals before they play again on March 12th. Lots to play for and lots of time to prepare.....
Notes:
(from Mike Anthony) -- three highly touted sophomores from Sagemont School in Weston, Fla., were on unofficial visits to UConn this weekend. Fab Melo, a seven-foot center from Brazil; Rod Days, a 6-foot-6 forward; Richard Peters, a 6-10 center. Andre Drummond and Tobias Harris also attended the game on Saturday.
other notes, the Seniors were not the only ones honored on Saturday, John Toner, the AD who hired Calhoun and Geno Auriemma, was inducted into the "Huskies of Honor" at halftime. ...and a banner was unveiled for Calhoun's 800th win.
